As the demonetisation move continues to create roadblocks in many sectors of the economy, the government on Thursday said that scrapped Rs 500 notes cannot be used to make payments for rail catering services, making train reservations, buying metro tokens and Public Sector Undertakings' bus tickets from December 10.
Earlier the government had allowed the usage of old Rs 500 notes till December 15 for making payments for rail catering services and booking train, metro and government-run bus tickets.
However, other places where you can still use your old notes till December 15 until further notice are:
- Government hospitals for medical treatment and pharmacies in government hospitals for buying medicines with doctor's prescription
- Purchases at consumer cooperative stores operated under authorisation of Central or state governments; customers need to provide identity proof; However, the purchase will be limited to Rs 5,000 at a time
- Purchase at milk booths operating under authorisation of the Central or state governments
- Payments at crematoria and burial grounds
- Payments in all pharmacies on production of doctor's prescription and proof of identity
- Purchases of LPG gas cylinders
- Purchase of entry tickets for any monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India
- Fees, charges, taxes or penalties, payable to the Central or state governments including Municipal and local bodies
- Utility charges for water and electricity only, limited to individuals or households for payment of arrears or current charges. No advance payments shall be allowed
- Payment towards court fees
- Payments towards purchase of seeds from centres, units or outlets belonging to the Central or state governments, Public Sector Undertakings, National or State Seeds Corporations, Central or State Agricultural Universities and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, on production of proof of identity: Provided that for the purposes of this clause, specified bank notes shall mean bank notes of the denominational value of Rs 500
- Payment of school fees up to Rs 2,000 per student in Central government, state government, municipality and local body schools
- Payment of fees in Central or state government colleges
- Payments towards pre- paid mobile top-up to a limit of Rs 500 per top-up
