The Maharashtra state legislative assembly on Wednesday passed the Motor Vehicle Amendment Ordinance which provides for the levy of a one-time tax on vehicles, after the minister for transport Shivajirao Moghe acceded to the opposition members demand to allow vehicle owners six months time to pay up the tax amount.
Moghe told the house that the one-time tax would be based on a formula, under which the older the vehicle the lower would be the tax imposed upon its owner.
He further noted that the state government expected to increase its revenue through the levy collected at the various checkposts located at the entry points into the state through the introduction of computerised weighing machines that would eliminate the scope for corruption by the RTO.
