Only Five Out Of 49 Pses Reach Target In April

Only 5 public sector enterprises, of the 49 enterprises under the heavy industries and public enterprises ministry, achieved their production targets in April 2002. The five companies are: Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Con-struction Company (BBJ), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), Engineering Projects India (EPI), HMT International and National Industrial Develop-ment Corporation (NIDC).

The ministry fell short of the target by Rs 77.23 crore with Rs 397.50 crore worth of production and an achievement growth of 83.73 per cent and underperformed in comparison to April, 2001, by Rs 59.87 crore.

While engineering and non-engineering units could not achieve the target, consultancy/contract units surpassed the target by Rs 10.67 crore. These units have recorded an achievement growth of 130.18 per cent and exceeded the April, 2001, performance by Rs 9.12 crore.

Bhel, the only navratna in the public sector enterprises roster of the ministry, registered an achievement growth of 102.40 per cent with a monthly production of Rs 171 crore, Rs 4 crore above the Rs 167-crore target. Bhel exceeded its April, 2001, performance by Rs 3 crore.

EPI registered the highest achievement growth of 179.20 per cent with a turnover of Rs 26.88 crore. The company exceeded the target by Rs 11.88 crore and surpassed its April, 2001, performance by Rs 6.87 crore.

NIDC followed EPI with an achievement growth of 133.33 per cent at a turnover of Rs 4 lakh. Though the corporation exceeded its targets, its performance slipped by Rs 2 lakh as compared to April, 2001. The government has decided close the corporation after its efforts to find a joint venture partner failed.

BBJ registered a turnover of Rs 2.02 crore with an achievement of 101.51 per cent and bettered its April, 2001, performance by Rs 1 lakh.

HMTI recorded a turnover of Rs 3.06 crore with an achievement growth of 103.73 per cent, and surpassed its performance in the same month last year by Rs 1.66 crore. Efforts are on to convert BBJ into a joint venture, while HMTI is exploring strategies to enter foreign markets.

Andrew Yule fell short of its targets by Rs 5.44 crore and the Cement Corporation of India by Rs 13.17 crore.

Other companies which recorded poor performance include Instrumentation Ltd, Kota, Scooters India Ltd and Nepa Ltd.
