The 11 per cent power tariff hike proposed by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) and ESCOMs (Electricity Supply Companies) has met with some stiff opposition from various section of society.

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) which will study the proposal and the opposition before sanctioning a revision in tariff has received more than 5,000 objections in this regard.

KERC for the first time is mulling over a differential tariff regime in the state, wherein higher revenue generating ESCOMs might have to reduce tariffs. The regulator has said that the five ESCOMs should arrive at revised tariffs based on various parameters instead of a uniform tariff.

V Madhu, KPTCL MD and chairman of ESCOMs in the state has not opposed this straightaway but said, "lets see how we can progress on this proposal."
