The state is now exporting 500mw through Power Trading Corporation (PTC) and Bidyut Byapar Nigam Ltd (BBNL) of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

But considering the upbeat scenario in the hydro-power position, the export could be stepped up to 900 mw from November onwards, official sources said.

Some power deficit states have already approached the Grid Corporation of Orissa (Gridco) for purchase of bulk power.

Karnataka has sought 300-400 mw power from Gridco to meet the demand for agricultural operation in addition to the current purchase of 100 mw through BBNL.

The managing director of Karnataka Power Trading Corporation Ltd (KPTCL), KN Srivastava, was here to hold talks with Gridco officials in this regard. Similarly, the Delhi government is also negotiating for purchase of power, sources said.

According to chairman and managing director of Gridco, Suresh Mohapatra, any decision on higher power exports will be taken after reviewing the hydro-power generation situation in the state.

A good monsoon has helped in better utilisation of hydro potential. A plan will soon be chalked out for preservation of water in the reservoirs so as to maintain hydro-electric generation till June next year.

Of the 500 mw exported by Gridco now, 400mw was through PTC. BBNL bought 100mw. This power was being carried to such states like Maharashtra, Chhatishgarh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

Gridco expects to earn Rs 75 to 80 crore per month from the export of power from November onwards. This will be enough to clear the current billing of generating companies like NTPC and Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) besides servicing the debt liabilities.

Earlier, due to cash flow constraints Gridco was unable to clear the current billing of NTPC, to the tune of Rs 50 crore per month, that invited punitive action from the national utility in the past.

In view of demand for power, Gridco may hike power rates. Gridco is now charging Rs 2 per unit and Rs 2.60 per unit for sale of power in off-peak and peak hours respectively.

If demand rise in coming months, rates may be hiked to Rs 2.30 per unit and Rs 3.00 and more per unit in the two slabs soon.
