OTPCL scraps its 1000 MW Rengali power project

Even as the coal rich Angul district continues to attract independent power producers, the state owned Orissa Thermal Power Corporation Limited (OPTCL) has scrapped its proposed 1000 MW power project proposed to be set up at Rengali.

Official sources said, OOPTCL decided to back out of the power project after realizing that acquisition of 500 acres of forest land is a tedious job.

Accordingly, the state utility has informed the Angul district office.

The company was to acquire 1300 acres in all for the said project out of which 500 acres constituted forest land.

According to district office sources,Orissa Thermal Power Corporation Limited was to set up a 1000 MW power project at Rengali as per the decision taken by the state government two years ago.

It also went ahead with the process of acquiring land at Rengali site, 90 km from here.

Notification under Section 4 (1) of the Land Acquisition Act had already been completed and the process of 6 (1) notification was underway.

All survey and field study works in villages were also over.
