The Delhi Government is losing out on revenue to the tune of crores of rupees as the big Multiple System Operators (MSO) and Direct-to-Home (DTH) service players are yet to be covered under the Cable Tax Act.
This was revealed by a Delhi Assembly-constituted Public Account Committee (PAC) in a report on excise, entertainment and luxury tax placed before the Delhi Assembly recently.
Strongly advocating for a comprehensive law or necessary amendments in the existing Act, the panel has said the big operators, distributors, DTH service providers and MSOs should be brought under the tax net instead of targeting the small cable operators only.
These operators should be kept under close monitoring and surveillance in order to minimise the scope of evasion, said the panel headed by Congress MLA Vijay Singh Lochav.
The department should also ensure that sincere efforts are taken to recover the dues and augment the collection of tax as much as possible, it added.
The nine-member panel also expressed surprise that "there is no established system by which the Delhi government could automatically get information about a cable operator working in a particular area in the national capital."
