The Maharashtra government, which is striving to compete with the fast growing Gujarat, has issued a government resolution on Tuesday to appoint a 14-member committee headed by the 13th Finance Commission Chairman Vijay Kelkar to suggest multiple instruments and measures for the removal of regional imbalance in order to achieve inclusive growth.

As reported earlier, the Kelkar-led team would also decide indicators to assess disparities in regional development of the state after taking into considerations the state government’s direct investments and expenditure and also investments by the private sector in the industrial sector. The committee is expected to submit its report within a year.

State planning secretary Sudhir Shrivastav is the committee’s member secretary. Abhay Pethe, member of the committee told Business Standard, “Maharashtra has been suffering due to accute regional inequalities. It has political, human and social dimensions. Some things needs to be done to rectify it at the earliest.”
