After the appointment with West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was cancelled at the last moment yesterday, senior Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee met him at the Raj Bhavan today.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had said that her party would meet the Governor as soon as he returned from Delhi to apprise him of the West Bengal government going back on the 'gentleman's agreement' signed at Raj Bhavan on September 7 between her and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the Singur land issue.

Trinamool sources indicated that the party supremo might meet the Governor this evening, but Raj Bhavan sources pleaded ignorance.

Chatterjee, after meeting the Governor, alleged that the administration was 'forcing' farmers who were not willing to part with their land for the Tata Motors Nano small car project at Singur and not taken compensation, were being 'forced' to accept compensation cheques.

Chatterjee alleged that CPI(M) cadre had 'forcibly' taken two vegetable vendors for accepting compensation.

''If this coercion continues the situation will take a serious turn,'' Chatterjee said, adding in such a case it would demand imposition of President's Rule.

''Our party may have to demand imposition of Article 356 if the lawlessness continues,'' he said.

He said he had informed the Governor about the 'coercion' and pleaded for his intervention.

He said his party chief has also informed the Governor about the matter.
