A bandh call given by a traders' organisation to protest the introduction of the value-added tax (VAT) regime evoked partial response in Delhi today, with some shops in wholesale markets remaining closed, while those in residential colonies operating as usual.

Many business establishments in the Chandni Chowk area, Azadpur vegetable market and 40 wholesale markets of commodities and oils kept their shutters down, in response to the one-day nationwide bandh call, given by Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal. The bandh was supported by the Confederation of All India Traders (CIAT).

Most commercial centres near residential areas were open. A representative of the New Delhi Traders' Association said it had yesterday issued a circular to its members to keep their shops in markets like Connaught Place and Khan Market closed.
