With Congress scripting a comeback story in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, state party in-charge Digvijay Singh today said the electorate has voted in favour of the Centre's "pro-people policies" and against the "misrule" of BSP chief Mayawati.

"Mayawati ji ki sarkar ne do varshon mein Uttar Pradesh mein jo halat kiye hain, uska bhi janta ne yahan jawab diya hai (it is a reaction of the people against Mayawati who has brought the UP to this state in two years)," the Congress General Secretary told PTI here.

From a mere 12 per cent vote share getting nine seats in 2004, the Congress, which went it alone in the Lok Sabha elections after failing to strike a pre-poll understanding in the state, surged to around a 20-seat win this time.

Asked about the unexpected success of the party in Uttar Pradesh, Singh said, "Congress has done so well in UP because of the pro-people policies of the Central government. Moreover the people have also voted in the party's favour in reaction to the Mayawati government's two years of misrule."

Asked about the dismal performance of Congress candidate in Varanasi, he said, "we lost mainly because of BSP's Mukhtar Ansari, who took away large chunk of our votes."

On his personal role and reaction on the performance of Congress in the elections, he said, "Hamare to balle balle ho gaye (it is all cheers for me)."
