The Delhi government in a bid to curb pollution through vehicles, wants petrol pumps located on the periphery of the capital to supply good quality fuel. It has written to the Ministry of Environment to issue guidelines to curb the supply of adulterated fuel by the petrol pumps located on the periphery of the capital, particularly within 50 km.
The state government feels that the substandard fuel is nullifying the gains in the air quality through converting public transport vehicles to run on CNG.
"The local public transport system in the city comprising mainly buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, RTVs and others are mostly CNG based. Those vehicles using fuels such as petrol and diesel are periodically checked for pollution norms here, ensuring less vehicular pollution. The problem, however, arises with the entry of vehicles from the neighbouring states which are often ill-maintained and may be using adulterated fuel as well not meeting the prescribed norms," a government official said.
The government also wants the ministry to issue directions to the neighbouring states to give a "major emphasis on proper maintenance and regular pollution checking of vehicles."
