The second phase of land acquisition for the Mopa International Airport has been stalled as no notification under Section 6 of the Land Acquisition Act was issued.

According to the plan, 23.71 lakh sq mt was to be bought in the second phase.

However, Goa Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane said the process could be revived. He took up the issue and the strong objection to it arising from south Goa with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the AICC plenary session at Hyderabad on Monday.

The prime minister told Rane that a committee of experts has been formed to study the the feasibility of the airport project.

Sources said the land acquisition may be started afresh. "It doesn't mean that the project is scrapped if the acquisition process is stalled," an officer said.

As groundwork like conducting physical survey of the land has already been over, the process under Sections 4 and 6 of the Land Acquisition Act would not need more than three months, he said.

Under the first phase, nearly 51 lakh sq mt has already been acquired.

It may be recalled that the Rane government has temporarily put the work at Mopa on hold in view of the controversy over the project.

Rane also said the Centre has agreed to his government's request to continue operations at Dabolim International Airport as well.

Meanwhile, north Goa district congress committee's panel on Mopa called on the prime minister on Monday in Hyderabad. The committee urged the to expedite the work on the airport project.
