With the West blaming the developing countries for climate change, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he will emphasise the need for a collective responsibility between the developed and developing world to preserve environment at the G-8 Summit in Germany. As he embarked on a four-day visit to attend the summit of the eight developed countries beginning tomorrow, Singh said more development was the best way for developing countries to protect the climate."At the summit, I will speak on issues related to climate change. I will emphasise the need not to lose sight of the fundamental and universally accepted principle of common but differentiated responsibility and respective capabilities between developed and developing world," he said. The comments assume significance as US President George W Bush last week suggested that the developing countries, particularly India and China, were responsible for most greenhouse gas emissions leading to climate change."It is also the fact that more and not less development is the best way for developing countries to address themselves to the issue of preserving environment and protecting the climate," Singh said in statement.Besides the G-8 meet, the Prime Minister will attend the summit of five outreach countries from the developing world -- Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa. In Germany, Singh will also have a brief meeting with Bush during which the issue of civil nuclear deal will come up.
