Jaitley is learnt to have informed Vajpayee about the draft declaration on Saturday evening and in turn received instructions to put up stiff opposition to the proposal.
Even before Jaitley left for the Cancun ministerial, Vajpayee had asked the delegation to ensure that the interests of the farmers was in no way compromised.
On Friday, Jaitley is also learnt to have approached the Prime Minister to talk to international leaders like South African President T Mbeki to ensure that the coalition of developing countries stayed in place.
