The Madhya Pradesh government has constructed 4624 roads totaling 21,338 km in length under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, said the official sources.

With the help of these roads 8050 villages were connected with the all-weather roads providing round the year connectivity fom the main roads of the state, they said.

These roads have been constructed at a cost of Rs 5437 cr, official sources said today.

The scheme was launched by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on December 25, 2000 with a view to connect inaccessible villages having population of 500 or more in general areas and 250 or more in tribal areas with all-weather roads.

In order to ensure that the quality roads are being constructed under the PMGSY supervision and quality control consultants have been appointed in addition to departmental staff, sources said.

Besides, a three-tier system for quality control has also been introduced in the scheme to ensure that quality roads are being  constructed under the scheme apart from the State Quality Monitor and National Quality Monitor, which undertakes checking of the roads constructed at regular intervals and categorise the roads accordingly.
