Pollution & Health Boards Launch Waste Handling Plan

West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has launched a project to ensure proper treatment of bio medical waste.

WBPCB and the state health department and town municipalities would set up four common treatment plants across the state. Ravi Kant, member secretary of WBPCB, plants would be located in Kolkata-Howrah, Kalyani, Durgapur-Asansol and Jalpaiguri-Shiliguri-Darjeeling areas.

While the last three were at conceptual stage, the facility at Howrah would come up in three months. Howrah Municipal Corporation has entrusted the job to Hyderabad based Ramky Group to set up the plant. Kant was speaking at a seminar by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in the city on Thursday.

While the regulation regarding bio medical waste was in place from January 1, 2003, it could not be enforced with commensurate facility.
