The Department of Posts in India is planning to launch warehousing and order-processing services for the industry. The warehousing would follow the department's recent initiative on logistic services. It launched logistic service under the brand name 'Logistic Post' in seven states.

"The Department of Posts is no more a letter delivery service provider to the nation. Today, we are the entity with the largest deposit base in the country. Now, logistics is the new avenue for the department in view of the potential of the sector and our well-established network across the country. We will soon launch the warehousing and order-processing services for the trade and commerce once the Logistic Post becomes operational properly," said U Srinivasa Raghvan, member - operations and marketing, Postal Services Board of Department of Posts.

The department will offer its space to the customer on rental basis and transport the goods as per the direction from him.

"We will work on a system where trade and industries will bring their ready goods to our storage space and we will move in different parts as per the direction from the customer. Logistic industry is worth about Rs 1 lakh crore in India and we are eyeing a major chunk of it," said Raghvan, who was in Ahmedabad on Thursday on the occasion of launch of Logistics Post.

The Department of Posts will initially offer its services from Ahmedabad to Vadodara, Vapi, Valsad, Surat and Mumbai and vice versa. In the second phase, the organisation will extend its services for other centres in the state.

"The post master generals are free to find out new avenues in their respective areas to offer new services. We are putting stress on retailing business too, where we are open to selling various products through our network. At present, we are distributing prasad of a couple of temples from south India," said Raghvan.

The Department of Posts is planning to cover the entire country through its over one and a half lakh post offices under the logistic services in near future.

Currently, post master generals of different territories have been assigned to study the feasibility of Logistic Post in their respective territories.
