Power situation in the city improved considerably on Monday after a massive shortfall since last night resulted in wide-spread outages here.

The deficit rose to 460 MW in the morning, but with both units of the Budge Budge facility of the CESC, which supplies power to the city, resuming generation, the gap was reduced to 220 MW with a promise of further improvement.

"With both the units (250 MW each) now restored and generation geared up, we hope there will not be any major shortage from eight pm onward," a CESC spokesperson said.

One unit of the CESC's southern generating station (76 MW) is also expected to be restored by midnight, CESC officials said.

Electricity generation was hit last night when a fire broke out at one of the transformers at the Jirat facility of the private power utility, but it was quickly restored later in the night.

However, fire at another transformer this morning led to simultaneous tripping of two units of the CESC's Budge Budge station complicating the situation.
