In view of a steep hike in the price of DAP fertiliser, the farmers in the district may get complex fertiliser in lieu of DAP this kharif season.
There is a demand for 65,000 tonnes of chemical fertiliser for kharif in the district, and the department of agriculture now has stock of 12,000 tonnes.
Joint director of agriculture Ganesh Naik said the department had sent a proposal to the government to supply the remaining 53,000 tonnes. He was responding to queries at the general body meeting of the ZP here. He said the price of DAP had shot up in the international market and the department is mulling to supply complex fertiliser as an alternative to DAP.
ZP president Adiveppa Manami instructed the agriculture department to evaluate the demand and make necessary arrangements to get the required quantity.
The joint director said that a proposal has been submitted to the government, seeking seeds and other farm equipment to be distributed among farmers.
JD(S) member Amrut Desai complained that the officers from the agriculture department never attended gram sabhas and charged them with being partisan in choosing beneficiaries of various schemes at the behest of elected representatives of the ruling party.
