"There is always a rise in prices between May and September. Even in the normal years prices do rise between May and September," Singh told reporters here before wrapping up a two-day visit to Bhutan.
"We have taken adequate measures. We have had excellent procurement of rice and wheat. We have taken effective steps. We are hopeful of moderation over the next few weeks," he said.
"If weather gods cooperate we would see moderation of inflation after September 15," the prime minister said.
Singh said that the government could have taken "harsh" measures like raising interest rates but that would have affected the growth process.
On the issue of Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Singh maintained that the deal was in India's interest, He said the the country's strategic programme would remain unaffected by it and hoped "good sense" would prevail among the Left parties.

To press his justification of the deal, he cited the support the agreement has got from former President APJ Abdul Kalam, former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra and the scientific community.
Kalam, Mishra and the scientific community are of the "near unanimous opinion that the nuclear deal is in our national interest," Singh said.
