Mill sites, the once-famous landmarks of Mumbai that have now transformed into dilapidated and deserted structures following their closure, have evoked interest from a new quarter besides the builders' lobby -- Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales' Phoenix Trust and the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU) have come together with The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to hold a workshop for revitalising mill sites and their surroundings. The workshop is aimed at drafting plans to revitalise the mill lands - considered an important part of the city's heritage and history - without destroying the essence of their historical fabric. The land is spread over mostly central Mumbai and south Mumbai. The workshop is a follow-up of the interest generated by Prince Charles during his visit to India in November 2003 when he had interacted with members of INTACH, leading to subsequent partnership of INTACH with INTBAU (one of the Prince's heritage trusts), according to INTACH sources. The design workshop would be organised in the city between March 7-11, the sources added.
