Prohibitory orders have been promulgated along Meghalaya's border with Assam in view of the assembly polls in the neighbouring state.

Orders under section-144, CrPC, have been clamped prohibiting carrying of arms and weapons by members of the public within an area of 5 km from the state boundary with Assam, official sources said.

Elections in Assam are slated for 4th and 11 April. The order will remain in force until further orders.

Certain pockets along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya boundary are known for frequent tension.

Twelve people were killed, some 50,000 people were displaced and over 2,000 houses were torched in the 9-day ethnic riot, in January, in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills and Assam’s Goalpara districts.
