The government is holding a public hearing on the proposed Rs 9000-crore aluminium refinery project here on Tuesday. |
The government had signed a memorandum of understanding with JSW (Jindal South West) Group in July 2005 for setting up of an aluminium complex in the district, comprising a 14-lakh tonne alumina plant, 2.5-lakh tonne smelter and 600 MW captive power plant. |
As per the MoU, the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation will supply bauxite ore to the proposed aluminium refinery, JSW Aluminium Refinery sources told Business Standard. |
The proposed refinery would need 4.5 million tonne of ore per annum. The government is allotting about 1600 acres of land at Sabbavaram, comprising several villages of Anthakapalli, Vangalli, Sirsapali and R Raipuragrahram in the district. Coal India has already agreed to supply one million tonne of coal a year. |
Bauxite from the mines would be transported to the Similiguda railway station on the KK line through closed conveyors and from Similiguda, it would be brought to the plant site at Sabbavaram by rail wagons. |
"The company is taking all precautionary steps to avoid any type of pollution at all levels and we are giving high priority to address the environment issues," sources said. |
Some non governmental organisations and Left parties, however, are strongly opposing the plant, fearing damage to the environment here. They are planning to obstruct the public hearing. |
