Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal today ordered the preparation of a comprehensive master plan for Jalandhar and surrounding areas, keeping in view the challenges of next 25 years.

Presiding over a meeting to review the projects of Jalandhar and Doaba region, Badal said a master plan that would include rehabilitation of sewerage network, water supply network and metered connections to everyone was a must. It must also have solid waste treatment plants, redesigning and widening of interior and arterial roads of the city, new road engineering, CCTV cameras. The execution should be by a singular nodal agency.

Laying down the road map of Doaba, Badal said though Jalandhar was known as a sport city and has a sizeable presence of leather processing industries, the city has not been able to cope with the increasing pressure of civic amenities. He said the plan must include coverage for sewerage and water supply, laying the storm water drains, water recharging.

He added that municipal corporation should also draw up a plan to provide energy efficient LED street lights, construction of sufficient numbers of bus queue shelters and plantation of saplings along the roads, wherever feasible.
