With quality ruling the roost in all the commodities at the Global market, the Centre has entrusted the work of studying a pattern of fixing MSP on the basis of quality, to different agencies, like Cotton Corporation of India, DCD Director Dr.Anupam Barik said.
Inaugurating a one-day seminar on "improved crop production strategies for enhancing cotton productivity, quality and economic return," Barik said that India has already jumped to the second spot, surpassing USA, in cotton production and the quality also should be enhanced if the country has to to capture export market.
Claiming that technology and four mini-missions on cotton have helped the cotton sector reach this new height, he said the government had announced Jute technology mission and also would announce a new technology mission for sugarcane next year, based on the success of cotton.
Though cotton production in India has gone up to 315 lakh bales in 2007-08 from 156 lakh bales in 2001, it was a challenge to increase the productivity and yield across the country, Barik said.
