The issue of reservations in the private sector is set to be resurrected. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has called a meeting on November 15 to decide on a code of conduct for industry for job reservation for backward classes.

DIPP will compile data on the number of SC and ST persons currently employed by the Indian industry and also decide on the number of posts to be reserved for backward classes in the future.

"The DIPP will meet and decide on the percentage of reservation for backward classes in the industry and on the level of employment in which posts should be reserved for the backward classes," Assocham D secretary general S Rawat said.

DIPP, in a communiqué to industry bodies, said, "In order to deliberate on preparing a code of conduct for affirmative action to be progressively adopted by the industry, the secretary of DIPP has called for a meeting on November 15."

In the meeting, DIPP would also formulate a way to compile information on SC and ST persons presently employed by the industry. According to Rawat, Assocham has already prepared a code of conduct for reservations for SC and ST persons in the industry.
