Rahul Khullar new Commerce Secy

The government today appointed Rahul Khullar as the new commerce secretary in place of Gopal Krishna Pillai, who has been made the new home secretary.

Pillai, who is serving as the commerce secretary, will take over as an Officer on Special Duty in the home ministry on June 11, a Prime Minister’s Office release said.

According to the norms, the home secretary’s tenure is for a fixed period of two years. The current incumbent, Madhukar Gupta’s tenure was extended by the previous United Progressive Alliance regime for two months, ending June 30. Pillai will take over as the new home secretary when Gupta superannuates.

Pillai is a 1972 batch Indian Administrative Service officer belonging to the Kerala cadre.

Khullar, a 1975 batch IAS officer from the Union Territory cadre, has served as an Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce. During this stint, he handled negotiations related to the Doha Round of world trade talks.
