Raigarh police today arrested more than 150 villagers to restore coal transportation in the area as irked people had resorted to economic blockade on Monday in protest against the allotment of coal mines to Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL). |
The villagers had been staging dharna on road since Monday, which severely disrupted the transportation of coal to major industrial units in Raigarh, including JSPL. |
They have been demanding cancellation of a public hearing that the administration completed on Saturday without taking the villagers' grievances into account. |
The villagers, who had gathered in large number to lodge their grievances in the public hearing, were lathi-charged to disperse from the spot to complete the hearing. About 50 villagers were injured in the lathi-charge that intensified people's movement in protest against the allotment of coal mines. |
The villagers have been demanding that the coal mines be allotted to South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), as JSPL had allegedly failed to provide adequate compensation to the villagers earlier while acquiring land for the mining and power plant. |
Since Sunday, coal transportation in the region had come to a standstill, as villagers did not even allow a single truck to pass through the area. |
