With considerable rainfall of over 64 mm being received in Gujarat, the state has reduced its deficiency from 30 per cent about a fortnight ago to a mere 10 per cent.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while the whole of Gujarat still has a rainfall deficiency of 10 per cent, the Saurashtra-Kutch region has registered normal rainfall so far.
"Since Monday the state has been receiving considerable rainfall. Soon, in next 2-3 days we expect the 10 per cent deficiency of rainfall in Gujarat to be covered up," said Kamaljit Ray, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) - Ahmedabad.
Till August 12, the state of Gujarat has received rainfall of 398 mm as against the normal of 442 mm. Moreover, the IMD has forecasted moderate to heavy rains for Gujarat for the next few days. This, when monsoon season in Gujarat had a bumpy start. For the month of July, as against a normal rainfall of 306 mm for July 2011, Gujarat had received rainfall of only 206 mm, resulting in a departure of 100 mm. Last year, in the month of July 2010 the state of Gujarat had seen an actual rainfall of 335.8 mm as against a normal of 306 mm, resulting in an excess of about 30 mm. The department has also been meeting with the state government officials to monitor the monsoon season in Gujarat. "Through our meeting with state government it has been found that with the last few days receiving ample rainfall, the drinking water issues, especially in regions like Kutch is improving," said Ray.
