The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a rainfall of more than 25 centimetres (cm) on the Goa-Konkan coast.

Mumbai, situated on the coast, is also likely to experience this heavy rain in the next 48 hours, AB Majumdar, director general, IMD told Business Standard.

According to the department's website, on Wednesday, June 20, a well-marked low pressure area was formed over the east-central and west-central Bay of Bengal. This depression has, since then, moved in a west-northwesterly direction across north Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Under its influence, widespread rains were experienced in Andhra Pradesh, south Orissa, south Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. With the likely west-northwestwards movement of the system, the enhanced rainfall belt will shift to rest Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, south Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and southeast Rajasthan from 23 to 26 June.

"Isolated extremely heavy rain of more than 25 cm are likely over coastal Karnataka, rest of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Goa and Gujarat from the 23 to 26 June," said Majumdar.

He added that the southwest monsoons would advance further into remaining parts of Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, entire Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan during the next 5 days.

The monsoon is also likely to keep its date with Delhi, with the weather department expecting the first showers in Delhi anytime around June 29.

The normal date for the south-west monsoon to hit Delhi is June 29.
