State government employees in Chhattisgarh have threatened to go on strike on August 21 in support of their demand to implement the recommendations of the sixth pay commission in the state.

“If the state government can launch subsidised rice scheme for 3.4 million poor families and a number of other schemes for the farmers, why it can’t implement the sixth pay commission recommendations in the larger interest of about 250000 state government employees,” President of Chhattisgarh Officials and Employees Joint Front Subhash Mishra said here.

Mishra said that the state government should take immediate decision as the election code of conducts could be made effective any time as the state was going to the polls later in October or November.

“The state government is quick in action for laying foundation stones across the state before the poll panel codes come into effect. It shall show the same interest and hurry in implementing the pay panel suggestions,” he added.

According to Mishra, Delhi and Haryana states have announced to implement the recommendations of the sixth pay commission despite the establishment expenditure is more in both the states are compared to Chhattisgarh.

The state will have to bear an additional financial burden of Rs 800 crore, which will account just 3 per cent increase in the establishment expenditure, Mishra added.

Mounting pressure on the government, the Front—comprising 23 recognised unions of officials and employees—had threatened to go on strike on August 21 if the state government failed to give its employees a better pay deal after the Central government implemented the recommendations of the sixth pay commission for its employees.
