Jagdev Kaliya, divisional manager of Western Railway-Rajkot, said such a project is under operation at present in central southern railway between Mumbai and Goa.
Under this system, transport operators get their trucks loaded with consignment booked at stations on routine railway lines. The trucks are boarded on wagons of special goods train and dismounted at the junction concerned of the destined state and form thereon the truck plies to the respective point of delivery.
This special cargo train will have the capacity to carry 40 loaded trucks at a time. Rajkot railway division plans to run such special goods trains to eastern, northern and southern parts of India.
According to P R Adhiol, divisional commercial manager (WR) -Rajkot, that such a system will help cut down on transportation costs and time.
Not only will it save on cost of fuel such as petrol and diesel to a great extent but also avoid the burden of state taxes and toll tax.
The system will prove economical for transport operators and will also prove a safe and swift service option for traders and industries in transporting commodities.
