Jamguda, a small and tribal dominated village in Odisha's Kalahandi district was provided the community right of harvesting bamboo under the Forest Right Act (FRA) 2006 on Sunday. Union Rural Development minister, Jairam Ramesh handed over the transit pass (TP) to the forest dwellers in the presence of the Union tribal affairs minister V. Kishor Chandra Deo, state's revenue minister, SN Patro and MP (Kalahandi), Bhakta Charan Das at a meeting held in the village.
Jamguda was the first village in the state and second in the country where the forest dwellers are harvesting bamboo without any special permission from the forest officials. Bamboo has been declared as the minor forest product (MFP) under the FRA and the communities have been given rights to harvest the MFP.
