Ramkey, a Hyderabad-based company, has been selected by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation to establish a solid waste management project in the city.

Ramkey's quotation of Rs 56 crore was lower than the municipal body's estimate of Rs 58 crore. The company will operate the project for three years after completion of the project. The cost, including the running expense, will increase to Rs 82 crore.

The company has implemented a hazardous waste project in Kanpur rural area, besides many in southern parts of the country. The final agreement is being drawn and is likely to be signed shortly.

The company will collect waste door to door and take it for disposal, where it will be composted, Uday Narain Tewary, additional municipal commissioner, Kanpur Municipal Corporation, said.

However, the municipal corporation will continue to clean drains and remove waste of building materials.

Under the Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (NURM), Kanpur has prepared a city development plan, which in-principle has been approved by the Planning Commission.

The first phase involves an expenditure of Rs 3,000 crore and the second phase Rs 12,000 crore. The disposal of solid waste management project is the first one to be approved for implementation by the Centre.
