Registration made mandatory for telemarketersBS Reporter / New Delhi June 6, 2007The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) today issued guidelines for telemarketers in order to check unsolicited commercial calls (UCC). It will now be mandatory for all telemarketers to register themselves with DoT.In wake of widespread public resentment against such calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), after consultations with DoT and the Reserve bank of India, released the the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations, 2007.The guidelines propose a compulsory registration fee for all telemarketers of Rs 1,000. The registration will be valid for 10 years. A telemarketer can also surrender his registration by giving a 30 days notice. Moreover, a telemarketer is allowed to have multiple registrations but interconnection between different telemarketing centres is not permitted.Also, the transfer of registration to another party is allowed only after DoT's consent.The guidelines, expected to keep a check on 60,000 telemarketers across the country, have defined
