Reliance enters Fortune 500

Four Indian companies, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Reliance Industries, have made it to this year's list of 500 top companies worldwide compiled by Fortune magazine.
 
Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum and Reliance Industries made it to the list this year, while Indian Oil improved on last year's position. However, none of them were listed among the Top 50 Asian companies.
 
Indian Oil, with a revenue of more than $25,316 million, was ranked 189th, a slight improvement over last year's 191st position. Its revenue, the magazine said, increased 12.5 per cent since 2002 and profits at $1,631 million were up 19.9 per cent.
 
The company employs 37,158 people and its assets have been estimated by the magazine at $13,956.6 million.
 
Bharat Petroleum, with a revenue of $12,053.7 million, trails at the 450th position. Its revenue is up 16.1 per cent since 2002 and profits at $442.8 million have gone up 38 per cent.
 
At 462, Hindustan Petroleum is next, with a revenue of $11,750.5 million and a profit of $430.2 million. Its revenue since 2002 has gone up 12.9 per cent and profits by 41.8 per cent.
 
Reliance Industries follows at the 482nd spot. Its $11,327.7 million revenue shows an increase of 19.4 per cent since 2002 and its profits at $1,125.5 million are up 32.7 per cent.
 
Retail giant Walmart Stores tops the list with $26,3009 million in revenue and a profit of $9,054 million.
 
It is followed by BP, Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch/Shell, General Motors, Ford Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota Motors, General Electric and Total.
 
In Asia, Japan dominates the top five positions, with Toyota Motors, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Hitachi, Honda Motors and Sony making the grade.
 
In Europe, the top five giants are BP, Royal Dutch/Shell, DaimlerChrysler, Total and Allianz.
