The oil companies have recently increased the prices of petrol and diesel in line with the global prices and the transporters fear that this would lead to a recession in the industry.

Rajkot chamber of commerce and Industry president Hareshbhai Vora said the fuel price hike would lead to an increase in the prices of various commodities carried by trucks and other vehicles.

Earlier, prices of petroleum products were decided by the central government but now the price control is with the oil companies, he said.

Fuel prices have been increased on 17 occasions in the last seven years, he said.

Rajkot Goods Truck Transport Association president Mavjibhai Dodia said the price hike was a blow to the struggling industry.

Truck operators in Rajkot will have to face a monthly additional burden of Rs 90 lakh, he said.

Dodia said the hike has upset the planning and budget of transporters.

There are around 3,000 transport operators in Rajkot and they would have to spend and additional Rs 3,000 per truck per month after the hike, he said.

Vora has alreay requested the petroleum ministry to immediate withdraw the hike.
