Raj Kamal Rao, member (mechanical), Railway Board, told the media here that the JVs comprise one passenger coach manufacturing facility at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, one diesel locomotives manufacturing plant at Madora in Bihar, to be set up within three years.

Besides, one electric locomotive manufacturing facility would also come up at Madhepura in Bihar. The railway administration had floated global tenders to finalise the suitable partners in India or abroad.

The factories would produce 1,000 passenger coaches and 100 locomotives in a year. The diesel locomotive production would have a capacity in the range of 4,000 horse power (HP) to 6,000 HP.

The railways have not finalised the exact amount of investment required in these ventures. However, according to Rao, it could be around Rs 2,200 crore.

Similarly, the locomotive factory at Chittaranjan in West Bengal is likely to produce 225 electric locomotives as against the 200 produced last year.
