Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has crossed the two million tonne mark in its production of hot metal and crude steel in 2008-09.
The steel plant has recorded a capacity utilisation of 110.3 per cent in hot metal production and 109.6 per cent capacity utilisation in crude steel output in 2008-09.
RSP has also adapted swiftly to the rapidly changing scenario in the global steel market and focused on making more products which had good demand. As a result of its fine-tuning in its production, the steel plant clocked a capacity utilisation of 316 per cent in hot rolled plates, 168.4 per cent in hot rolled coils, 156.8 per cent in Plates from plate mill and 103.9 per cent in CRNO (cold-rolled non-oriented) steel. RSP’s market driven approach enabled it to achieve a capacity utilisation of 119 per cent in saleable steel production and the steel plant recorded the best ever saleable steel production since inception during January-March period of 2008-09.
Apart from fine-tuning its production the steel plant also focused on reducing its cost of production.
