Five-acre premises mandatory for affiliation, has left future of as many as 80 per cent colleges affiliated to Pt Ravi Shankar Shukla University (RSU) in Chhattisgarh uncertain.
The Executive Council (EC) of the RSU had decided that the university would grant affiliation to those colleges which hold five acres of land. The condition applies for government and private colleges affiliated to Chhattisgarh's largest and oldest university founded in 1964.
“The decision was taken following the guidelines of the University Grant Commission (UGC),” RSU Vice Chancellor Dr Shiv Kumar Pandey said. The colleges set up earlier and did not have the required premises had been given a year time to arrange the same, he added.
According to university officials, 80 per cent of the colleges affiliated to the RSU had come under the scanner following the decision taken at the EC meeting. Of the colleges include many prestigious institutions that have historic identity and significance.
The EC members had opposed the proposal at the meeting when university authorities tabled it. But they were convinced that the non implementation of UGC guidelines would debar the RSU from getting grants.
The University officials said they would now ask the affiliated colleges to make the necessary arrangement and submit the relevant land record papers to establish that it was in possession of five acres of land for the premises. Failing this, the affiliation of the college would be cancelled, they added.
The new colleges applying for affiliation would have to submit the land record papers along with the application form.
At present, 78 government and 139 private colleges are affiliated to RSU. Of it, most of the colleges do not have five-acre premises.
