Ruling Congress and various opposition parties on Monday staged demonstrations across the union territory as part of the nation-wide protest against the Centre's demonetisation with Chief Minister V Narayanasamy saying the move has landed the common man in 'utter disarray'.

Volunteers of DMK, an ally of Congress, also held protests at various places while cadres of Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) courted arrested trying to block a train at the railway station here as part of the protest.

Addressing protesters at a demonstration here, Narayanasamy charged that the Centre's decision to scrap high denomination currency notes had come to "dislocate the country's economy and landed the daily wage earners, the poor and other sections of people in utter disarray."

Similar demonstrations were held by Congress workers at various other places.

DMK cadres led by the party convenor and MLA R Siva held a protest here.

Cadres of the CPIM, CPI and the VCK courted arrest at the railway station here when they attempted to picket a Villupuram-bound train, to protest the ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, police said.

Slogans condemning demonetisation were raised by the agitators who came to the station in a procession.
