The Indian rupee depreciated by 12 paise against the US dollar in early trade today, following the American currency's gains overseas.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the rupee fell by 12 paise to 45.50 a dollar. The rupee closed lower by 10 paise at 45.62/63 a dollar in the previous session.
Forex dealers said besides strong dollar overseas, demand from importers for the US currency also weighed on the rupee sentiment.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex rose by 43.39 points, or 0.25 per cent at 17,095.93 points in the opening trade today.
