The Indian rupee fell by 15 paise to Rs 44.87 against the US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today following dollar gains against other currencies overseas and a weak trend in the equity market.
Forex dealers said dollar strength against the euro and other Asian currencies and a lower opening in the stock market mainly put pressure on the rupee.
The rupee closed stable at Rs 44.72/73 against the US currency in the previous session on Friday on alternate bouts of buying and selling.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by 109.12 points, or 0.46%, to 18,159.42 in opening trade today.
