In a bid to promote ‘zero tolerance’ to ragging, the Supreme Court on Friday asked every college to have a psychiatrist to sensitise senior students, freshers and staff against the menace and asked state governments to set up committees to look into incidents of ragging.
A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat delivered slew of directions as recommended by the two-member panel which probed Amann Satya Kachroo's death at a medical college in Himachal Pradesh.
The court also accepted a report by a committee establishing a link between alcholism and ragging and its recommendation that “active de-addictive measures should be introduced for college students if they are found to be indulging in these (alcholism and violence) activities”.
The Bench, also comprising Justice A K Ganguly, asked the state governments to give an undertaking to the court about the steps taken by them in accordance with the apex court directions to prevent incidents of ragging in educational institutions.
“Shocking findings reflecting degradation of value system”, was how the Supreme Court had described after going through the report establishing a link between alcholism and ragging.
