The Supreme Court today rejected a review petition by Maharashtra Transport Minister Swaroop Singh Naik and Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot. |
The two were sentenced to one month's simple imprisonment for violation of the Supreme Court's orders by giving permission to six saw mills in a protected zone in 2004. At that point, Naik was was the forest minister and Khot the secretary Forests. |

According to sources in Mantralaya, Chief Secretary DK Shankaran has signed Khot's suspension order and sent it to the chief minister's office. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is likely to sign it after he returns from Delhi late in the evening. |

Sources say Naik has also submitted his resignation to Deshmukh. |

Deshmukh, speaking to reporters in Delhi today, said Naik and Khot would have to go following the court's order. |

According to sources, Naik and Khot were expected to be arrested after Naik's resignation is accepted and Khot is suspended. |
