The Supreme Court today dismissed appeals of advertisers in Tamil Nadu who had challenged the municipal rules imposing restrictions on hoardings in crowded streets. There are nearly one lakh hoardings in the whole state with Chennai alone having 4,500 hoardings. The power to grant licences to erect hoardings is vested with the local authorities.Under the rules issued in 2000, hoardings that disturbed traffic and were otherwise hazardous were ordered to be removed by the local authorities. The advertisers moved the Madras High Court without success. The Supreme Court judgment, delivered by a bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat, upheld the High Court ruling.
