Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) needs to focus on protecting the interest of investors.
"We generally discussed some of the problems of Sebi... We shall have to address and pay attention particularly to the basic objective of SEBI to protect the investor," Mukherjee told reporters after meeting the board members of the regulator here.
He will meet the Reserve Bank of India board tomorrow and discuss the issues concerning the banking sector and financial inclusion.
Besides Sebi Chairman C B Bhave and board members, the meeting was also attended by finance ministry officials including Secretary Ashok Chawla.
Sebi, Mukherjee said, was seized of the problems being faced by mutual funds and taking steps. "They are handling the situation in mutual funds," he added.
