Secretaries panel to review food prices tomorrow

A panel of Secretaries will meet here tomorrow to review the prices of essential commodities and vegetables in the backdrop of active monsoon rains.

The Committee of Secretaries, headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, is meeting ahead of the scheduled review of the monetary policy by Reserve Bank of India on July 27.

The panel is likely to review progress of sowing of the kharif (summer) crop mainly rice, besides examining the availability of buffer stock of foodgrains, sources said.

The impact of floods on paddy sowing in northern states is also likely to be discussed by the Secretaries.

The Agriculture Ministry today said that up to 10-15 per cent of paddy crop in Punjab and Haryana -- considered food bowl of the country -- is feared to have been affected by floods.

Secretaries in the ministries of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Agriculture, besides others are likely to attend the meeting.

It may also discuss ways to tame prices of vegetables, some of which are selling at exorbitant rates. For instance tomato is selling at over Rs 60 a kg while green vegetables like beans are available only above Rs 40 per kg.

While the general inflation in May was 10.16, the annual food inflation was 12.63 per cent for the week ended June 26. Inflation figures for June will be out tomorrow.
