Gujarat-based Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) has launched an initiative in association with the European Union(EU) called the 'Swavlamban' that aims to empower 25,000 informal sector women through market relevant capacity building programs within the next 4 years.
The journey started with 5,000 women in Dungarpur district in Rajasthan today. A SEWA spokesperson informed that the EU will provide funds to the tune of Rs 6 crore for the programme,while more partners will be reoped in the future.
The core objective of this program is to build self-reliance in poor and marginalise women through large-scale capacity building in the various areas.
SEWA intends to impart direct training to an estimated 25,000 women over a span of three years.
Within a span of 5 years, SEWA expects to uplift 25,000 families through 'Swavlamban' and expects at least twice this number of families to benefit through indirect training.
Nearly 90 per cent of the workforce in the country belongs to the informal sector and of these around 44 per cent are illiterate.
